Father Paisios (1924-1994)was a Greek Orthodox monk who spent most of his life as a hermit on Mount Athos in Greece. Many of the faithful and spiritual seekers from around the world came to his little hut to receive spiritual guidance and his prayers, because he was renowned as a holy elder (staretz or geronda)with great gifts of the Holy Spirit to read hearts and prescribe effectual "medicines" for healing the soul. Many consider him a candidate for sainthood. Athanasios Rakovalis, the author, was one of those seekers who went to Elder Paisios for 12 years, and who lived near him on the Holy Mountain for 7 years. He writes, "Quite a few times, after our conversations, I wrote down his counsels, so that I wouldn't forget them. Most of the time I wrote them down immediately, using the precise words of the elder, other times after a few hours, and occasionally after a day or two." His book has gone through 8 editions in Greek since 1997, and is now available in English. The topics of the elder's talks are wide-ranging and are grouped under these major topical headings: "Marriage, Family, Upbringing Parents", "Health", "Social Concerns", "Spiritual Things", and "Various". The elder spoke plainly, directly, and very practically to all the issues brought to him. Lavishly illustrated with many color and monochrome photos, drawings, and icons from the Holy Mountain. Imported from Greece.
